7 June 2016

Due to the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance, it is highly important to rationalize the treatment of respiratory tract infections. The antimicrobial effect of several medicinal plants has been proved in in vitro models in the past decades, but the usefulness of these promising plants in the clinical practice should s till be confirmed by human studies. It would also be worth trying to review the recipes of our currently used magistral preparations, and rewrite them based on the newest results. The European Herbal Monographs recommend the essential oil of thyme, eucalyptus, pine, anise, bitter .fennel, and peppermint for the adjuvant treatment of respiratory infections, and except for bitter fennel, these essential oils can be found in many products on the market.
